Invest in Cornwall is the inward investment arm of Cornwall Council, and is an EU ERDF funded project tasked with attracting inward investment into Cornwall by SME’s from the UK and abroad. They needed a web overhaul. They needed a website that was responsive. They needed a digital resource to inform, inspire and impress.
Whatsmore, they needed a solid SEO strategy in place to aid in signposting potential investors to the site, and specifically to the information they need. After winning a competitive 4-way pitch, we were chosen to build the site, and imperatively, we had to do so from our Lancashire base, whilst keeping the essence of Cornwall at the heart of the design.
We created a responsive website that was in line with the Invest in Cornwall brand; it incorporated their sub-brands, highlighted the six specialisation sectors Cornwall had to offer, and, crucially, made it incredibly easy to make contact with the right team member at every opportunity. We used design considerations such as colourways to enhance user journeys and introduced a raft of custom landing pages for events, announcements and marketing collateral across the following two year period.
We also carried out all on-site SEO, helping to drive the right people to the right information. This included creating and carrying out a stringent SEO strategy, including (but not limited to) keyword research and integration, metadata and alt tag optimisation, social markup customisation and setting 301 redirects. We also optimised the internal linking structure and kept the code clean to keep the site load times down. We configured Webmaster alerts and we performance tested the site. In short, we made sure the site appeared where we wanted it to.
We made sure the site was a fitting digital home for Cornwall by incorporating a raft of imagery across the site, showcasing the stunning landscapes and miles of coastline the region has to offer. We embedded video backgrounds to add movement to the site and to further show off the incredible lifestyle and business benefits of being based there. Furthermore, we kept the design fresh, simple and modern, ensuring it was in keeping with the future thinking technology SME’s the project was looking to attract.
The site worked so well on mobile that it actually now sees around 72% of traffic visiting from either a phone or a tablet. Whatsmore, it was such a success overall that it saw almost a 200% increase in sessions on the site versus the previous period, from over 150% more users.
The SEO strategy paid off, too, with organic traffic increasing on the period previous, and these visitors having the highest session duration and lowest bounce rate.
Crucially, it played an integral part in helping Invest in Cornwall successful enough to secure an important second round of funding from the EU.
